MASS INDEXING AND RETRIEVAL PROJECT
The Mass Indexing and Retrieval (MIR) sampler contains two
self-extracting archive files.
MIR_WP51.EXE = WordPerfect 5.1
MIR_ASC.EXE = view as is/other word processors
To read this file README2.MIR, you must have already copied
one of these files to your hard disk and extracted the files
as directed in the file README.MIR on the sampler diskette.
The WordPerfect 5.1 version is set for the standard width of
65 characters. I use lines and column numbers, set with the
WordPerfect sequence "SHIFT-F1 3 8 u"; the footers include
page numbers, date of issue, and copying permissions.
The behavior of tab characters is not always predictable, so
all tabs have been eliminated. Similarly, graphic characters
(except accented characters in 14ANALYZ) have been replaced so
that "graphically challenged" printers can be used.
Here is the list of all files that have been extracted.
README2.MIR = this file, ASCII format
OVERVIEW = a quick summary of what it's all about
NEWSREL = news release, a public relations view
ORDER = a one page order form (VERY important!)
FRONTIS0 = frontispiece page for the introduction
COPYRIGH = copyright information; information about
making copies; mail / e-mail / fax
information
00TOC = Table of contents for the introduction.
This and the next five files beginning with
0 make up the introduction
01WHAT = Intro topic 1
Computer indexing and retrieval techniques
02WHO = Intro topic 2
Who should be using MIR tutorials
03WHY = Intro topic 3
Why you want to use MIR tutorials
04HOW = Intro topic 4
How the MIR project works for you
05LICENS = Intro topic 5
Your GNU Public License
10TOC = MIR Tutorial ONE Table of Contents
14ANALYZ = MIR Tutorial ONE topic 4
First steps in data analysis
(representative technical topic)
20TOC = MIR Tutorial TWO Table of Contents
30TOC = MIR Tutorial THREE Table of Contents
40TOC = MIR Tutorial FOUR Table of Contents
50TOC = MIR Tutorial FIVE Table of Contents
The remaining files are either (ASCII) C language source or
DOS executable. The selection may vary from one sampler
release to the next. To learn the usage of any MIR program,
input the command name (without the EXE extension) followed
by a space and either a question mark or /U (slash-capital U
for "Usage"). Example:
a_bytes /U
To print the above list of files, use a command such as:
TYPE README2.MIR > LPT1
The same sort of command can be used to print any ASCII file.
If you selected WordPerfect files, use WordPerfect 5.1 for
viewing and printing. If during installation you asked for
files set up for any word processor, use that word processor
now on the files you wish to view and/or print.
You may want to start with the file OVERVIEW; it gives you a
quick first impression of what MIR is all about.
If you like what you see, please make copies of the sampler
for your friends. We welcome your completed order forms and
even more your participation through suggestions and
improvements to the tutorials and software.
